A Young Sheldon character’s very rare appearances in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage were finally explained by what happened during the first The Big Bang Theory spinoff’s final season. First Marriage immediately following the events of Young Sheldon season 7 made its story feel like a continuation of the Big Bang Theory prequel, with the Young Sheldon characters often visiting First Marriage contributing to that notion. However, the presence of one in particular decreased significantly from Young Sheldon to Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, and its actor wasn’t too happy about it.
Over the years, Young Sheldon had become more than just Sheldon’s story, with the Cooper family shaping its direction just as much as its titular character. The Coopers’ story could have virtually continued forever, but Young Sheldon being indissolubly connected to its titular character ensured that it would have had to end around the time Sheldon left for California. In a way, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage provided the cut needed by being a separate show that also had the vast majority of its central characters come from Young Sheldon, thus partially continuing Sheldon’s family’s story.
At the same time, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage had to establish itself as a separate entity from Young Sheldon, as it had a whole other focus. This made featuring some Young Sheldon main characters now and then the perfect solution that balanced maintaining the link to Young Sheldon without compromising on First Marriage’s identity. However, one actor part of Young Sheldon’s main cast expressed disappointment about their role in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.
Meemaw's Absence In Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage Stems From Young Sheldon's Chaotic Ending
Annie Potts as Meemaw speaking at George's funeral in Young Sheldon
Annie Potts felt “devalued” by the decision to have her character, Connie Tucker, also known as Meemaw, only return sporadically to Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. Among its many revelations, Young Sheldon: The (Juicier-Than-Meemaw’s-Brisket) Inside Story of the Hit Comedy by Jessica Radloff shared Potts’ perspective on the Young Sheldon sequel and more. Mere months passing between Young Sheldon ending and First Marriage beginning made the transition feel seamless, and yet, Potts’ recollection of the events shows how that wasn’t the case at all. You can read the related excerpt below:
“We were told they were hoping some of the Sheldon family would pop by once in a while, but that is not a real or generous invitation, you know what I mean? Like, ‘Oh gosh, that sounds really great,'” she said before recalling her debut on Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. “I feel a little bit like I’m a guest in my own house, and there’s no real place for me. I love to work, but it’s a very odd sensation.”
Young Sheldon: The (Juicier-Than-Meemaw’s-Brisket) Inside Story of the Hit Comedy painted a clear picture of the chaos prompted by the circumstances in which Young Sheldon ended through interviews with those involved in The Big Bang Theory’s prequel, from creators to cast and crew. Potts’ account of how not being offered a series regular role in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage made her feel is only one of the examples, and yet it perfectly encapsulates the problems stemming from the chaos of having First Marriage begin right after the truncated final season of Young Sheldon.
Why Meemaw's Absence In Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage Is So Disappointing
CBS
While the relative absence of Potts’ Meemaw makes perfect sense in the context of letting Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage stand on its own two feet, it’s still a shame that she doesn’t have a bigger role in the Young Sheldon spinoff. This is exemplified by Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 3, episode 2’s mention of Meemaw by Mandy’s boss, which offered an effective reminder of how close Connie always was to Georgie and Mandy.

For ten seasons, six friends gathered at a Manhattan coffee shop with a famously orange couch. The group — Ross, Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Joey, and Phoebe — made this spot their second living room. What is the name of this iconic café?
✓ Correct! Central Perk is the coffee shop where the Friends gang spent most of their free time. With its iconic orange couch and Gunther behind the counter pining for Rachel, it became one of the most recognizable fictional locations in TV history.
✗ Cue the sad trombone! The answer is Central Perk. MacLaren’s Pub is from How I Met Your Mother, Monk’s Café is from Seinfeld, and The Coffee Bean is a real chain. Central Perk is where Phoebe played “Smelly Cat” and six friends became family.

The American version of The Office follows the employees of Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch, led by their well-meaning but painfully awkward regional manager. Which actor played the beloved Michael Scott?
✓ Correct! Steve Carell turned Michael Scott into one of the most iconic sitcom characters ever. His mix of cringe-worthy humor and surprising heart anchored The Office for seven seasons. “That’s what she said” became an inescapable pop culture catchphrase.
✗ Cue the sad trombone! The answer is Steve Carell. Rainn Wilson played Dwight Schrute, Ed Helms was Andy Bernard, and Ricky Gervais created the original British version and played David Brent. Carell’s Michael Scott is the heart and soul of the American Office.

Often called “the show about nothing,” this groundbreaking 1990s sitcom followed a fictionalized version of a stand-up comedian and his three friends in New York City as they obsessed over life’s minor annoyances. Which show is it?

In this CBS sitcom, a father in the year 2030 tells his children the winding, years-long story of how he met their mother. Along the way, audiences meet Barney Stinson, whose catchphrase “Legen — wait for it — dary!” became iconic. Which show is this?
✓ Correct! How I Met Your Mother (2005–2014) starred Josh Radnor as Ted Mosby and Neil Patrick Harris as the suit-obsessed Barney Stinson. The show’s creative framing device and running gags made it a 2000s staple — though its controversial finale still divides fans.
✗ Cue the sad trombone! The answer is How I Met Your Mother. New Girl featured Jess and the loft gang, Happy Endings was a short-lived cult favorite, and The Big Bang Theory focused on Pasadena physicists. Only HIMYM gave us Barney’s Playbook and the blue French horn.

✗ Cue the sad trombone! The answer is Cheers. Taxi was a late-70s/early-80s sitcom, Night Court was set in a courtroom, and Wings was actually created by Cheers writers but set at an airport. Only Cheers gave us Sam and Diane, Norm’s barstool, and one of TV’s all-time great theme songs.

✗ Cue the sad trombone! The answer is Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Parks and Recreation was set in Pawnee’s government offices, Scrubs took place in a hospital, and Superstore was set in a big-box retailer. Only B99 featured the 99th Precinct and the legendary Jake-Holt dynamic.

Are you a showrunner — or still binge-watching reruns on the couch?
Indeed, Connie’s help was essential for Georgie and Mandy’s family in Young Sheldon, as she put a roof over Mandy’s head when Audrey shunned her. Without Connie, Georgie would have faced many more challenges winning Mandy’s heart as they were getting ready for CeeCee’s arrival. CeeCee’s own name represents Meemaw’s importance to Georgie and Mandy, as they gave her Connie’s name. Finally, First Marriage itself showed how similar Connie and Mandy were in the latter’s willingness to participate in the former’s schemes.
Given Mary Cooper’s active role in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, it would have been possible for the Young Sheldon spinoff to include more of Connie. Georgie and Mandy’s own connections to Connie prove it would have served the story, and it could have made Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage even more entertaining, given the liveliness Connie’s storylines always brought to Young Sheldon.
