Avengers: Endgame's Iron Man Death Scene Will Officially Change Again in 2026

It’s ironic, given what’s happened since, that Avengers: Endgame was presented as a definitive full-stop on the first era of the MCU. Thanos’ defeat and Iron Man’s death brought the curtain down on the Infinity Saga that had bloomed from 2008 to 2019 and made an eye-watering amount of money with very few missteps. And then, Marvel Studios struggled to move on.

It’s somewhat inevitable when you think about it. Great dynasties live eternally in the shadow of their greatest achievements until they surpass them, and Marvel simply hasn’t had anything like that level of impact since. Sure, there have been remarkable flashpoints – like the stunning success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day – and great works of art created, but nothing has rewritten the brain chemistry of MCU fans quite like Tony’s sacrifice, and Captain America getting his dance.

The entirety of Phase 4’s identity was forged on the messy fallout both of the Snap and its undoing, and even beyond that, Marvel Studios has proven fundamentally incapable of leaving Endgame’s climax untouched. First came Secret Invasion’s addition of Endgame's unseen, unofficial post-credits scene of Nick Fury’s Skrull team stealing DNA from the battlefield, rewriting the triumph as an opportunistic bio-weapon crime scene. And in 2026, the change will get even more pronounced.

Rather than letting the dust stay settled, Marvel is altering the narrative landscape of Endgame's final act twice more in what remains of this year, proving that even the most sacred ending in modern movie history is subject to revision if the right opportunity arrives

VisionQuest Will Change How You Watch Iron Man's Death

The emotional core of Endgame has always belonged to Tony Stark's sacrifice, reflecting Steve Rogers’ own sacrifice back at him, and completing Tony’s arc for redemption that started when Cap said he’d never be the one to lay down on the wire. It was as inevitable as Thanos thought he was, and beautifully written, come to that, but that didn’t make it any easier to watch.

We saw Pepper have to endure her husband’s death, and Peter Parker reckon with the loss of another father figure, and each of the Avengers destroyed by his noble act. And now, Terry Matalas has decided that wasn’t enough. Just as Secret Invasion’s Rhodey twist opened the possibility of him having to learn of his best friend’s death now that he’s freed at some point, VisionQuest will also officially show how another MCU character suffered from Tony’s death.

As Matalas has just officially revealed, VisionQuest will explore Tony’s death and the fallout through the lens of F.R.I.D.A.Y. his AI, whose prime directive was to keep him alive. Literally nobody experienced Tony’s death as closely or as intimately as her, and we’re going to have to suffer his sacrifice again to understand her suffering.

It’s actually a clever move, given how F.R.I.D.A.Y.’s perspective will inform VisionQuest’s broader ideas about the nature of artificial intelligence and existence. It also offers a direct link back to Vision’s iconic line in WandaVision: "What is grief, if not love persevering?"

The MCU Is Changing Avengers: Endgame For a Third Time in 2026

With VisionQuest altering the emotional heart of Endgame quite subtly, the upcoming re-release of the fourth Avenger movie is taking a knife to its ending. The special release, titled Avengers Endgame: Encore will add new footage, explicitly to bridge it to Avengers: Doomsday, which has been officially confirmed to be a direct sequel.

As co-director Joe Russo noted, the new material – including a new post-credits scene – will establish exactly how the Time Heist directly triggered the cosmic destabilization leading to Doomsday. In other words, Endgame’s final version and Doomsday itself will frame the Avengers’ most triumphant victory, and the sacrifices of Black Widow, Vision, and Tony Stark, as the catalyst for an even bigger fight. Years after the Battle of New York’s victory was reframed as causing colossal collateral damage, we’re repeating the same pattern of undermining.

Even though Avengers: Endgame should have been the pinnacle of achievement for the Avengers Initiative, it’s now going to just be another case of their existence causing issues for Earth (and in this case, the Multiverse). Sure, that’s good for Doomsday’s story, but has anyone stopped to think about the cost to Endgame’s legacy?

The Russos Secretly Foreshadowed Endgame’s Unhappy Ending Years Ago

Despite the sense of closure brought by Endgame’s ending initially, we should have seen the signs. As already alluded to, they were written in the fallout from the first Avengers movie, where the triumph over Loki in New York became part of the reason for the Sokovia Accords. Even the defeat of Ultron was – somewhat confusingly – presented as a major step in Thanos’ quest for the Infinity Stones. And it’s happened all over the MCU: Cap saved Bucky and kicked off Civil War, Thor saved his people and walked straight into a massacre by Thanos, the Avengers saved the Earth from Ultron and created Zemo’s vengeance, T’Challa opened Wakanda to the world, and ignited a war with Namor… Every victory comes with ramifications.

It’s an idea that has been threaded throughout the MCU: with great power comes great responsibility, but also, with great victory comes great consequences. And it’s something that Endgame and Doomsday’s creative teams have always kept close to the front of their storytelling. As Joe Russo explained during the We Love You 3000 Tour back in 2020, there’s a sort of inherent curse around superheroes:

"I think like, in a way, Tony Stark was always fated to die. And… here’s the thing about our culture that’s interesting. A lot of people get upset about that, when I say something like that. But when you’re a hero, your job is to die. That is your job as a hero, is to sacrifice yourself for the greater good. And that’s what we’re trying to teach people in the movie is that you’re either in it for yourself, or you’re in it for the community. And Tony was in it for the community."

Very few superheroes in the MCU have been allowed to retired unless they were just forgotten about or their sequels have gone on ice. Black Widow was killed off despite her traumatic arc, likewise Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye retired several times and seems unable to commit to sitting the fight out, and Iron Man himself tried to give up multiple times before his fate dragged him back. So should we ever really have believed that Steve Rogers heading off to his happy ending after messing with the timeline – stealing a life, as Doctor Doom would put it – wouldn’t come with some extraordinary consequence? Unfortunately, no matter how hard we hope, the fate of our heroes was sealed the moment they chose a heroic path.
