The Legend of Korra: What Happened To Korra After The Series Ended

The Legend of Korra may have ended with Korra and Asami stepping into a new chapter together, but that finale was hardly the end of the Avatar story. The series left Republic City and the wider world in the middle of enormous changes, from the growing connection between humans and spirits to the political upheaval caused by Kuvira. Korra's story continued through comics such as Turf Wars and Ruins of the Empire, giving the Avatar a chance to deal with consequences that the television series had only begun to explore.

What makes Korra's post-series adventures particularly interesting is how different her world had become from the one inherited by Aang. The Avatar was no longer simply responsible for ending a war between nations. Republic City was a modern metropolis, technology was rapidly changing everyday life, and the opening of the spirit portals permanently altered the relationship between the physical and Spirit Worlds. The comics expanded on those ideas while giving Korra, Asami and the rest of Team Avatar several major conflicts that never made it onto television. And now, more than a decade after The Legend of Korra ended, the franchise is preparing to move even further beyond Korra's era.

Korra and Asami Start Dating

While Korra and Asami’s relationship was left more or less ambiguous in the show, the graphic novels were free to explore their feelings. During the vacation in the Spirit World, Korra and Asami finally discuss how they feel and confess when they started falling for each other. Korra explains how Asami helped her recover after her poisoning, and Asami explains that the three years Korra was gone were very difficult for her. But although they have strong feelings for each other, not everything goes as smoothly at first.

Excited by their relationship, Korra takes Asami to meet her parents. At first, her mother and father are excited and pleased, but Korra’s father also comments it might be best not to tell others as they fear people would not understand their relationship. Korra is angered about their reaction, but Asami sees some wisdom in their advice.

Later, Kya, one of Aang and Katara’s children, talks to Korra, revealing that she’s also had relationships with women. Kya explains how reactions to same-gender relationships vary depending on the nation, with the Air Nomads being the most accepting and the Earth Kingdom being the least. While their talk dampens Korra’s excitement at sharing the news, eventually they tell Bolin, Mako, and their other friends. Everyone is happy and accepting of them, although Mako needs time to adjust to the news of their romance.

At the end of Turf Wars, Korra and Asami confess their love for each other, and they remain together in Ruins of the Empire.

The Turf Wars

During Avatar: The Last Airbender, the Spirit World was kept separate from the mortal world and most spirits avoided humans, with a few exceptions such as Koh, the face stealer. However, this changed after the events of The Legend of Korra. With a portal opening in the middle of Republic City, spirits began to fear humans would invade and destroy their home. Although most spirits were against intervening in human affairs, conflict was deemed unavoidable.

Kuvira’s attack destroyed the downtown area and, with the Spirit Wilds expanding, many people were left without homes and the city was thrown into chaos. The triads that controlled the city lost their territories and a young, ambitious nonbender named Tokuga took advantage of the chaos to kill the previous leader of the Triple Threat Triad. Once at the top, Tokuga started a turf war against the Creeping Crystal gang to gain more power and territory.

Meanwhile, the CEO of Keum Enterprises, Wonyong Keum, decided to turn the land surrounding the spirit portal into an amusement park, hoping to send tourists into the Spirit World. His plans enraged the dragon eel spirit, who threatened Wonyong. After Korra took the side of the spirits and airbenders began protecting the area from further development, Wonyong hired Tokuga and the Triple Threat Triad to take control back of the land.

Conflict erupted, with the dragon eel spirit turning dark and unleashing an attack on Tokuga, disfiguring the triad leader. Wanting revenge and thinking Korra had sent the spirits to attack him, Tokuga took over Keum Enterprises and attempted to conquer Republic City, threatening to release a deadly poison all over the city if his demands were not met. Fortunately, Team Avatar succeeded in stopping him, but Tokuga escaped and disappeared into the Spirit World.

United Republic of Nations Election

Due to the devastation of Kuvira’s attack and with vestiges of the Spirit World seeping into the city, Republic City was in pretty bad shape during Turf Wars. An evacuee camp was raised to help those who lost their homes due to the destruction. Zhu Li, Varrick’s former assistant and now wife, was in charge of the recovery efforts, helping organize the camp and developing a housing project to find homes for the refugees.

Meanwhile, President Raiko was seen as a coward for abandoning the city during Kuvira’s attack, so in an effort to be reelected, he usurped Asami and Zhu Li’s housing project, claiming it was his idea. Only interested in his political campaign, he made no real efforts to help the project.

Seeing how corrupt and self-centered Raiko was acting, Asami suggested Tenzin should run for office instead, but he refused, explaining that he was needed as the leader of the new airbenders. Instead, Tenzin suggested Zhu Li could make a better candidate. After pondering over this and with Varrick’s support, she decided to run against Raiko for the presidency of the United Republic of Nations. At the end of Turf Wars, she was elected thanks to her selfless efforts during Tokuga’s attack that were captured by Varrick’s documentary crew.

The Earth Kingdom Election and Kuvira’s Fate

After Kuvira’s actions and the Earth Queen's assassination, King Wu announced he was going to abolish the monarchy and implement democratic elections to decide the future of the Earth Kingdom. However, his efforts displeased those still loyal to the Earth Empire. Tensions brewed over Kuvira’s trial and Guan, a Commander still loyal to the empire, led his army to the city of Gaoling where elections were planned to take place, and announced his candidacy.

Korra asked Toph Beifong to run against him, hoping her popularity would ensure the Earth Nation would not fall into Guan’s hands. However, Guan had other plans. He captured Korra’s friends, including King Wu, and used brainwashing techniques more advanced than the Dai Li’s on the population to ensure the election would be a landslide in his favor. But Guan made a mistake when he captured Kuvira. Although she was the leader of the Earth Empire, Guan believed she was under the control of Korra and “rescued” her from Team Avatar with the goal of convincing her to join him.

But Kuvira was deeply against his use of brainwashing and escaped before the technique could be used on her. She asked Suyin for help and later joined Korra. But when they hesitated to fight against Guan, preferring to consult other world leaders, Kuvira took matters in her own hands and fled back to Gaoling city. Kuvira tracked down Guan and defeated him in single combat. Meanwhile, Team Avatar found a way to revert the brainwashing, reverting people to normal. Together, they succeeded in freeing the city from Guan’s control.

While Kuvira had previously proclaimed she was innocent during her trial, after the crisis with Guan she finally decides to admit her guilt and face justice. Since she helped stop the Commander, she’s sentenced to house arrest and makes peace with the Beifong family. As the Avatar universe continues to expand thanks to more comics, animated movies, and the live-action Netflix adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, fans might just find out even more of what happened to Korra and her allies after Avatar: The Legend of Korra.

Avatar: Seven Havens Is Taking the Franchise Past Korra

The biggest indication that the Avatar franchise is moving forward is Avatar: Seven Havens, a new animated series created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. Rather than returning to Korra as the main character, the series introduces the next Avatar: Pavi, a young Earthbender who discovers that she has inherited the Avatar mantle after Korra. The 26-episode series is being produced under Avatar Studios and is divided into two books of 13 episodes each.

Seven Havens also suggests that the consequences of Korra's era will remain important to the franchise. The story takes place after a devastating cataclysm has shattered much of the world, leaving both human and spirit communities in a dangerous new environment. Pavi is treated as a threat rather than a savior, and she must work alongside her long-lost twin, Nisha, while trying to understand the mysterious circumstances surrounding her own identity. Paramount+ has announced that the series will premiere globally on October 9, 2026, with the first 13-episode book released across October.

That does not mean Korra's era has been forgotten. In 2026, The Legend of Korra: Kya and the Secret of the Sand expanded the franchise's comic storytelling with a story centered on Aang and Katara's daughter, Kya, while Avatar Legends: Masters of the Elements Volume 1 brought together stories featuring several different Avatars, including Korra. Both releases demonstrate that the franchise is continuing to fill in parts of its history even as its main animated timeline moves ahead.

Meanwhile, Seven Havens is only one part of a much larger expansion. Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, an animated movie centered on Aang and his friends as young adults, premiered on Paramount+ on July 25, 2026. Netflix's live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender also continued with its second season in June, while its third and final season had already completed production. The projects remain separate interpretations and eras of the franchise, but together they show how Avatar Studios and its partners are keeping the world active across animation, comics, streaming and film.

For The Legend of Korra, that creates an unusual situation. Her television story is finished, and the immediate future of the animated franchise belongs to the Avatar who follows her. Yet Korra's decisions, particularly the changes she made to the relationship between humans and spirits, provide an important foundation for whatever comes next. Seven Havens therefore gives the franchise a chance to move beyond Korra without simply leaving her era behind.
