After 50 years, Star Wars: Starfighter confirms a major change to the franchise's canon.
The upcoming Star Wars movie directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling comes to theaters on May 28, 2027, in what is the 50th anniversary year for the franchise. While most plot details have been kept tightly under wraps, it was previously established that Starfighter's story is set a few years after The Rise of Skywalker, and it was revealed at D23 that Gosling is playing a pilot named Kade Auberon.
While speaking with Good Morning America at D23, Levy provided another major story reveal, which is that "there is no sort of governing enforcer or order" at the time of Starfighter. He explains that without any kind of central leadership, Kade and everyone else in the galaxy are "just trying to do their best to get by," and this leads to the pilot from a blue-collar background ending up on adventure with a special kind of starfighter. This is a moment in the galaxy where there is no sort of governing enforcer or order. And so everyone is just trying to survive, everyone is just trying to do their best to get by, and Ryan’s character Kade is from the wrong side of the galaxy, did not grow up with a silver spoon in his mouth, [has] a little bit of an edge, a little bit of a working-class background, [and] comes from zero privilege. He goes on an adventure that sort of intersects his fate with the fastest starfighter ever built.
Based on Levy's remarks, this will be the first-ever Star Wars movie where the galaxy is not overseen by any kind of governing body or order. In the prequel trilogy and The Clone Wars movie, the galaxy is overseen by the Republic, and they are followed by the Empire in Solo, Rogue One, and the original trilogy. The New Republic is in charge during The Mandalorian and Grogu and The Force Awakens, but are destroyed by the First Order in the latter film.
The First Order grows stronger and takes further control of the galaxy in The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, but are ultimately defeated by the Resistance at the Battle of Exegol. Just as the Rebel Alliance became the New Republic, it was widely presumed that the Resistance would become the next government for the era after The Rise of Skywalker, but this does not appear to be the case, with there being no overarching government during the events of Starfighter.

In 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back, Darth Vader delivers cinema’s most-misquoted line at the climax of his Cloud City duel with Luke Skywalker. Vader severs Luke’s hand and reveals their relationship. The exact line is — for the record — “No, I am your father.” What relationship does it confirm?

Jedi Master — or moisture farmer on Tatooine?
Whether it was the Republic, Empire, New Republic, or First Order, these institutions have always played an important role in prior Star Wars films. The absence of a new regime makes it all the more necessary for Kade and Starfighter's characters to rely on themselves, as there is no government to maintain order or swoop in and save the day. This creative decision may also connect to the movie being a completely new, standalone adventure, and ensuring that it does not have to navigate the narrative baggage of explaining who is running the galaxy now.
For stories set in the Star Wars timeline after Starfighter, they will have to decide whether there is still no central government or establish one. If the New Jedi Order movie featuring Rey (Daisy Ridley) still happens, it is intriguing to consider the idea of the Jedi coming back without any governing body existing at the same time.
